Our volunteer representative is holding an open garden with tea and cakes in aid of Homestart North Somerset in Backwell on Saturday May 26th from 2pm onwards. Please contact the office on 01934 419396 for more details if you would like to go.
Yesterday was massage and mindfulness at Mums in Mind with gentle chat, support and mum focussed activities this week. One mum arrived feeling “sad, anxious and shakey” but on leaving feeling said she felt “calmer and relieved” saying “thanks for all your help and to the lovely volunteers for helping me feeling better yesterday”.
Two hours and lovely people make SUCH a difference in a mothers week.
Here are some of our new recruits on week six of the volunteer preparation course.
Today, we have been out in the sunshine discussing values and attitudes.
We are looking for some enthusiastic people, who are committed to the work of Home-Start, to join us as trustees, helping to run this valuable charity.
If you have a few hours each month you could give to this interesting and rewarding role, please contact the office for an informal chat with a trustee to find out more. We look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you to Weston Lions for their kind donation of £500.
Dali Sidebottom, Home-Start North Somerset, Chair of Trustees receiving the cheque.
A huge thank you to Portishead Rotary club for the donation to Home-Start North Somerset of £100.
A couple of weeks ago we welcomed a lovely new group of mums to Mums in Mind, our peer support group for mums experiencing low mood, anxiety or isolation with a new baby. Our lovely cosy room at Portishead Children’s Centre has been filled with 8 little babies enjoying their baby yoga, homemade flapjacks for all and a baby play corner with our volunteers. As we do each week our mums also got to enjoy some precious time out to craft and chat about the realities of parenthood as much as the joys which this week had us in fits of giggles!
We are delighted to have received £8500 through Awards for All, Big Lottery Fund.
This money will go towards developing our Mums in Mind group work. This is a very exciting time for us and this will allow us to support more parents in our community.
Thank you to all of our supporters who attended our wonderful Curry Night at the end of January.
95 people sat down to a delicious curry at Claverham Community Centre and were then entertained by our delightful Bollywood dancers who got the whole room going!
Our thanks to Emdad from Scoop and Spice, Yatton & Winscombe, who cooked the curry fresh on the premises and to Claverham Community Centre committee who gave us a discount on the booking because of our local work with families. Thanks also to friends and organisations who donated raffle prizes.
We raised a very welcome £750 towards Home-Start’s running costs and a great time was had by all.
If you have any good ideas or would like to help with any future fundraising events, please contact the Fundraising Group via the office, we’d love to hear from you.

A further 9 of our volunteers enjoyed an in house training morning on Perinatal Mental Health this February on recognising the signs and symptoms of postnatal mental health illnesses including a variety of anxiety disorders and psychosis as well as a deeper understanding of depression. We looked at how our new Mums in Mind Group has been helping families we support to improve their wellbeing as well as all the recovery options, support services, social media and apps that now give families 24/7 support helping to normalise mental health issues and ensure there is a range of options available for families to choose the best ways forward for them. Please contact Karen, our Perinatal Mental Health Coordinator, for more information.
