Our next volunteer preparation course will begin in January. This eight-week course is completed by all our volunteers before they are matched with a family. If you or someone you know is thinking of applying to be a Home-Start volunteer, now is a great time!

Senior Organiser Julie Parsons said: “Our volunteers support around 65 North Somerset families each year. However, the ongoing impact of the pandemic on families means our services are needed now more than ever. We urgently need to recruit more volunteers to enable us to assist more of those local families in need.”

“Volunteers need to be a parent themselves and be able to offer two to three hours a week to support a family for up to a year.  We look for volunteers who have a compassionate, non-judgemental attitude and who understand the pressures of bringing up a family. In return, we offer comprehensive training and on-going support. Our volunteers find the experience of working with a family to be hugely rewarding.”

One of Home-Start’s current volunteers, Julianne (pictured) said: “I find volunteering very rewarding and that I am giving something back and helping families in their hour of need. I have four grown up children and two little grandchildren. I’ve experienced many of the things the families are going through, such as the difficulty of managing work alongside raising my children, living in a rural area without much support, or dealing with parenting problems such as sibling rivalry.

“I might be supporting a mum who is feeling anxious about going out, helping families find activities to do with their children or coming up with affordable play ideas such as playdough or slime.

“I would encourage others to volunteer as Home-Start’s service is much needed in North Somerset, especially after the pandemic, and many people have skills that can help other families. I think that having empathy and being non-judgemental are the most valuable skills. Volunteers get such a lot out of it, and the families get the support they need.”
