How did you find out about Home-Start?
I found out about Home-Start originally through a family I worked with in another authority who had a volunteer visiting them. The family really valued their volunteers visits and especially that it was not a paid worker but someone who choose to offer their time. The volunteer was like a grandmother to this family who had very few relatives. Slowly it gave the mother confidence that she could bring up her children and the practical support alongside knowing someone was there for them made a big difference to this family. So, I was delighted when Home-Start was set up in North Somerset.
What made you apply to become a trustee for Home-Start?
I retired last year having worked with children and families for many years. I wanted an opportunity to continue making a difference to children’s lives. I was interested in Home-Start because it works with babies and under 5s giving children and their parents the best start in life and avoids more serious problems later on . Working though volunteers and the community is very positive. I also hoped I could use some of the knowledge and skills I had built up at work to support Home-Start.
How long have you been a trustee?
I have been a trustee since August 2019 – it seems important to have a little break after work before getting too busy! As with any role it has taken some time to understand the role, the organisation and the contribution I can make. I was well supported and welcomed by the staff, the chair and the other trustees. There is clear guidance and induction and always someone to ask.
What do you enjoy about being a trustee?
I especially enjoyed the opportunities to meet some of the volunteers and families at fundraising events and Christmas celebrations. It was good to see the difference the service makes. The feedback from families is very positive and they clearly welcome and benefit from the service. I enjoy meeting the staff and seeing how hard they work to support volunteers and families. I enjoy working with the other trustees to find solutions and to enable Home-Start to continue to develop and meet needs in our community.
Some advice to anyone thinking of becoming a trustee
Home-Start needs more trustees to support its work and development. The organisation needs people with lots of different skills ,knowing about family life, fundraising, computers and IT solutions, human resources , finance, volunteering and many others.
